Street performers in Covent Garden are expressing their concerns over proposed new licensing laws that they believe will make it impossible for them to continue their acts. Westminster Council is considering implementing stricter restrictions following an uptick in complaints about sites in London’s West End.

The members of the Covent Garden Street Performers Association (CGSPA) fear that the introduction of rules regarding pitch size, sound amplification, and dangerous items will effectively put an end to their performances. The council is set to meet on December 4th to discuss these proposals.

During a previous committee meeting, councillors expressed dissatisfaction with the current rules, stating that they lacked significant enforcement powers without involving the police and did not go far enough. However, the CGSPA argues that these new regulations would have a detrimental impact on street performers:

• A ban on sound amplification would eliminate magicians who rely on it for their acts.
• An outlawing of dangerous props would render acts involving fire or knife-juggling, bullwhips, and beds of nails impossible.

Street performing has been a part of Covent Garden’s history since at least 1662 when Samuel Pepys mentioned a marionette show in his diary. Many renowned artists have honed their skills as street performers in Covent Garden, including Cirque Du Soleil, STOMP, and Dynamo.

Melvyn Altwarg and Peter Kolofsky, spokespersons for the CGSPA, emphasized that Covent Garden is a breeding ground for talent who go on to captivate audiences worldwide.

In the wake of growing tensions between Israel and Hamas, demonstrations on London’s streets have led to the arrest of three individuals. The Metropolitan Police confirmed this, stating that they will continue to maintain a strong presence throughout the city for public reassurance, with particular attention given to Jewish communities.

Supporters from both sides marched through London Monday following escalated conflict last Saturday when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel. The UK police are committed to upholding citizens’ right to protest, but any activity straying into criminality will be acted upon.

The apprehended are a 15-year-old male suspected of assaulting an emergency worker in Kensington High Street and being in possession of an offensive weapon; a 70-year-old man under suspicion for racially motivated criminal damage in Kensington; and a 29-year-old man arrested on Oxford Street suspected of actual bodily harm and offensive weapon possession.
